When people think of the “seasons” involved with summer, it’s typically for things like beach, construction, or biking. Dallas County Sheriff Chad Leonard points out a different kind of activity people should be aware of at this time of year: burglary season.
Leonard says every summer there is a rise in burglaries and thefts reported around the County, and he says the first line of defense against them is some common sense. He emphasizes that people should always lock things like barns, garages, and especially their house, essentially any place with valuables. Additionally, he says it’s never a good idea to leave keys inside of a vehicle — whether it be a golf cart, ATV, or a car — regardless if they’re locked up somewhere.
Leonard adds, the Sheriff’s Office often relies on information from the public to catch burglars, so he encourages people with information on the incidents to reach out to their local law enforcement. “If you know about these type of things and you know a potential person that might be doing these type of things — these burglaries and so on — you know, give us a call because you wouldn’t want it to happen to you. Help us out, and help us recover some of these vehicles, it seems to be the same people each time. So if you know something please let us know, and that usually helps out a great deal so we get things things resolved quicker and move on.”
Leonard reminds people that they can give information anonymously. To learn more about this and other topics involving the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office, click the links below to listen to the recent two-part Let’s Talk Dallas County program with Leonard.
