A new event in Greene County will have to wait, as the Greene County Peace Officers Association has cancelled their National Night Out.

The event was planned for August 6th, but Peace Officers Association President Jack Williams explains why it was cancelled.

“Well with unforeseen circumstances, mainly being guys that are going to the (Iowa Law Enforcement) academy, we’re losing about half our force between the two agencies (Greene County Sheriff’s office and the Jefferson Police Department) we will not be able to do National Night Out this year.”

Williams notes that due to the changes, they are planning to give the money back to the businesses that donated to National Night Out, or asking to see if they can use the money for their community-based programs. He talks about one aspect that they will carry out this year.

“We still are going to be doing the taser demonstration. We are checking with the (Greene County) school now to see if we can do that on the first home varsity football game. And we will be taking donations through the end of the week at the Greene County Law Enforcement Center.”

Checks can be made payable to Greene County Peace Officers Association.
