The South beat the North 24-13 on Saturday inside the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls at the annual Shrine Bowl football game. Bryce Hoyle, a 2019 Greene County High School graduate, and son of JJ and Teresa Hoyle of rural Grand Junction, played for the South squad. He was the long snapper and a defensive tackle for the winning squad.
This game is different than others because it’s an All-Star contest designed to raise funds for Shriner’s Children’s Hospitals, and to also expose outstanding football players who are also outstanding young men, to those less fortunate. Hoyle talked with Raccoon Valley Radio after the game, saying the two-a-day practices were difficult, and the extremely hot temperatures added to the difficulty. “I may have wondered why I was here a couple of times, but when Friday morning came around it really gave you the answer. When you see all those kids and see how happy they are to get to see athletes and see people participating for their cause, it really means a lot to them, and that’s the most I got out of this, along with the win.”
Hoyle leaves Aug. 12 for Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, where he’ll attend college and continue his football career.
