The Perry City Council recently accepted an agreement with the Iowa Department of Transportation for new safety lights at the Perry Municipal Airport.
Perry City Administrator Sven Peterson says the DOT will reimburse $7,665 through their Immediate Safety Enhancement program, after repairs were made earlier this year to the south runway end identifier lights at the airport. Peterson said the City is grateful for the State’s help with this project, as it can sometimes be difficult to cover the costs of emergency repairs. “We had a grant request into the Iowa DOT, they have some emergency funds for airports for situations where these important lights might go bad, and they have funds to cover that expense. So we were able to apply for that and get 70% of the project cost, so (it’s) very nice of the DOT to help us out and help keep our airport operating.”
Peterson points out that a few years ago the runway end identifier lights on the north portion of the runway were destroyed by a lightning strike. With the new lights on the south end, the airport has all new lights of this kind, which he said should last for several years.
