The Greene County School Board met Wednesday in regular session.
The Board approved a revenue purpose statement to use the Secure an Advanced Vision for Education (SAVE) funds, as part of the one-cent sales tax from the state. It was mentioned that it is not a new tax, but a continuation to use SAVE funds and must be voted upon by the communities in the school district. Due to the Iowa Legislature extending the sunset date to 2051 for SAVE funds, the district will be looking to have the election on the revenue purpose statement in September.
During reports, Construction Instructor Kirk Davis said he is looking to get a 1,400-square-foot lot in Briarwood to build a new house. Initial plans were three bedrooms and 2 ¾ bathrooms, with a basement. No action was taken by the Board.
The Board then approved two requests for school permits of less than one mile from the high school, two fundraising requests for Spanish and football, an interfund loan to transfer money from the general fund to the management fund for additional expenses, a change order for the new high school and career academy project of over $30,000, Anderson/Erickson to provide dairy products and Pan-O-Gold to provide bread products for the 2019-2020 school year and allowing the football team to attend two days of fall camp at Camp Dodge. Additionally, the Board approved a mental health nurse practitioner to meet with students and/or parents via Telehealth and prescribe medications.
The Board also approved several agreements for the 2019-2020 school year. They approved New Opportunities to continue to provide the Head Start program, the School Administrators of Iowa mentoring program as presented, sports medicine coverage and an impact concussion testing program with 21st Century Rehabilitation for $7,435, Iowa Central Community College to continue to provide early bird classes, as well as handbooks for school employees, coaches and directors, bus drivers and students and parent.
The Board approved four legislative priorities to recommend to the Iowa Association of School Boards. Those include: mental health, dropout and risk programs, Supplemental State Aid and sharing and reorganization. Finally, the Board approved its goals for the 2019-2020 school year. Those include: implementing a transition plan, increased interaction and communication between the board and students, staff and parents; continue to implement the District Career Guidance Plan, which will lead to a goal of 100% graduation rate; having a $1 million unspent fund balance in four years; and create an environment that encourages student enrollment and attracts/retains quality staff.
The meeting ended in a closed session for superintendent evaluation and goal setting.
