After 2018’s fundraising put Relay for Life of Guthrie County in the top 10 chapters in the nation for their dollars collected per capita, this past June’s annual event puts the group ahead of last year so far.

Kim Durst with the American Cancer Society says Guthrie County currently has over $58,000 raised, after 17 teams and over 150 people attended the “20 Years of Stompin’ Out Cancer” event on June 22nd. Durst adds this year the committee honored the Guthrie Center resident who started the event 20 years ago, “It was kind of neat to hear the story of Lillian Gilsen and her family and how they started the Relay 20 years ago and how she continues to give back and she really inspires all of us to continue to give back and especially with what we do with the fight against cancer so her granddaughter Penny Schramm did an awesome job sharing their story.”

Durst says they are a couple thousand dollars ahead from this time last year. The total number that was collected for the American Cancer Society last year was $65,500. The year’s not over yet, as the local Angels for Life team will be holding a golf tournament fundraiser on August 3rd. For a link to register visit here.
