The City of Minburn once again held their popular old-fashioned Fourth of July Celebration yesterday, though this year there was a little history brought back to life.
In honor of the City’s Sesquicentennial, the community dug out the time capsule entombed in the Old Millstone at Meek Park. A huge crowd gathered to see what the residents of 1969 had left for them in the box, including the families of the City Council members and Mayor at the time. After the capsule was unearthed, organizers of the event presented the items to the audience, which included a newspaper from the moon landing, photographs of the City and notable residents, and other important documents. The organizers were impressed by the condition of everything contained within the time capsule, pointing out that other cities in the area haven’t been so lucky. The contents will now be displayed at Minburn City Hall.
The time capsule was the first of two that were placed within the Old Millstone in 1969, with the other set to be revealed at the City’s Bicentennial in 2069. City leaders also plan to compile a new time capsule containing items from this year that will join the other. Organizers were pleased with how the time capsule reveal went, as well as the rest of the Fourth of July Celebration. They also remind people that the Sesquicentennial events will continue today through Saturday. To view a full schedule of activities, click the link below.
