As China and the U.S. are still in ongoing trade talks involving tariffs President Donald Trump has imposed on $250 billion of Chinese goods, Iowa Congresswoman Cindy Axne (D) awaits information from the Treasury Department to back a claim that Americans won’t pay for the tariffs.
Axne says she has sent two letters requesting the department provides Congress with research conducted on the consumer cost of tariffs. This follows the Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin telling Congress that he doesn’t believe American consumers will pay more for goods, a claim the President has also made. Axne explains why she is requesting the Treasury’s research, “I think it’s important that Americans understand what costs they’re going to face. I mean on average an American family will pay $831 a year because of those tariffs and I’ll tell you what, I think that’s significant money to Iowans. And so Iowans’ well being and economic security is one of the most important things for me to consider.”
The New York Federal Reserve Bank published reports stating that tariffs will cost the average American household $831 per year. Talks were restarted between China and the U.S. when President Trump agreed not to put tariffs on an additional $300 billion in Chinese imports.
