A single-vehicle rollover wreck near Perry that occurred midday Monday resulted in injuries for both passengers, though only one was taken to the hospital.

According to the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office, at 11:50 a.m., a 2005 Jeep Cherokee driven by 48-year-old Gayle Shaffer of Perry was travelling eastbound on Highway 141 near the frontage road that runs by the KDLS studio. She reportedly dropped off the roadway onto the south shoulder. Shaffer attempted to correct the vehicle back onto the highway, but lost control and went into a sideways slide. The SUV then entered the south ditch and flipped over, coming to rest upside-down.

Emergency crews responded and had to extricate both Shaffer and her passenger, 59-year-old Henrietta Aguilera of Marion, Illinois, using non-mechanical means. Aguilera was taken to an ambulance on a stretcher, and was transported by Dallas County Emergency Medical Services to Mercy Main Hospital in Des Moines with possible serious injuries. Shaffer was able to walk away from the wreck under her own power and had apparent minor injuries, but she refused medical treatment at the scene.

Both passengers were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash, though the airbags did not deploy. The vehicle was considered a total loss. The Perry Police Department and Perry Fire Department also assisted at the scene.
