A state audit report released Friday shows the Bagley Firefighter’s Association has been involved in improper spending.
According to Iowa Auditor Rob Sand, a special investigation was requested by the former fire chief of the Association for the period of February 1, 2014 through September 30, 2018. Sand’s investigation found about $13,983 of improper disbursements and about $6,901 of unsupported disbursements from the Association’s bank accounts.
The spending included retail and convenience store purchases, purchases from vendors, Amazon, and cash withdrawals. The report also shows about $2,634 of undeposited collections that were identified, including fundraising collections the Association’s former treasurer stated he received but were not deposited. The audit report includes recommendations for the Association to strengthen internal controls, such as improving segregation of duties, keeping supporting documents for all expenditures, and maintaining adequate financial records. Copies of the report have been filed with the Guthrie County Sheriff’s Office, the Division of Criminal Investigation, the Guthrie County Attorney’s Office, and the Attorney General’s Office.
