In a game filled with errors and comebacks, Greene County defeated Roland-Story (Story City) on Tuesday night 8-7 in Jefferson in a Heart of Iowa Activities Conference softball game. Coach Tom Kennedy’s Rams won their fourth straight and are now 8-15 overall after starting the season 0-8. The Rams are 5-7 in the conference while the Norsemen fell to 8-12 overall and 4-9 in conference play.
Both teams had six errors. R-S had three of the miscues in the first inning when the Rams built a 6-0 lead. The Norsemen played four straight innings with no errors, then had three more in the sixth, allowing the Rams to go back in front after the game was tied, 6-6 on six straight runs from the Norsemen. The Rams also had trouble defensively leading to numerous unearned errors.
The Rams had nine hits to eight for R-S. Eighth grader Emma Hoyle was the winner scattering eight hits and she had seven strikeouts, among the highest total of her young varsity career. Ninth grader Madison Geise took the loss.
Megan Carey and Izzy Bravard each had two hits for the Rams. Eighth grader catcher Emma Stream hit a two-run double in the first, the lone Greene County extra base hit. The other Greene County hits went to Jenna Beyers, Carmyn Paup, Tieryn Tucker, and Karissa Stephenson. Hoyle drove in one run.
Tuesday was Senior Night for the Rams. The two seniors are Paton-Churdan graduates Jenna Beyers and Megan Carey. Beyers was injured late in the contest and finished the game on the bench after being spiked while playing shortstop and covering second base.
Today is an off day for Greene County with a Thursday make up game in Gilbert, and the final HOIAC game of the season in Des Moines on Friday vs. Saydel.
