A Jefferson resident recently went on a trip to visit our nation’s capital, and she had all of her expenses paid.
Kassie Lamoureux is going to be a senior at Greene County High School this fall, and she attended the National Youth Tour in Washington, D.C. She was selected by Midland Power Cooperative through the Iowa Electric Cooperatives to go on the weeklong trip. Lamoureux says while she was there she toured several monuments, war memorials, the Simthsonian museums and saw the White House. She describes her favorite parts of the trip.
“Well the coolest thing would probably be talking to our representatives and our senators (from Iowa). That was the highlight of the trip for me. But monument-wise and museum-wise I liked the Newseum, which was a museum dedicated to the 1st Amendment (of the U.S. Constitution). and I thought that was really cool. I would definitely recommend seeing that if you’re in (Washington) D.C.”
Lamoureux explains why she wanted to go on this trip.
“It’s a great opportunity. Plus you’re with other Iowans who care about our nation’s history, and care about their communities, which is part of the seven principles of cooperatives is ‘Concern for Community.’ So it’s a great way to meet people and you learn a lot.”
Lamoureux thanks Midland Power Cooperative for their sponsorship and she says it was the best week of her life. Only 40 students across the state are chosen to go on the trip. To learn more information about the National Youth Trip or how high school students can apply, click the link below.
