The Stuart Aquatic Center is set to open for the season this Monday, nearly a month after its intended opening date due to emergency repairs.

Public Works staff spotted a problem this spring when the pool failed to stay full of water. Pleva Mechanical Incorporated was contracted to find the source of the issue, which Public Works Director Jim Henderson explains, “There is a return apron all the way around the pool, that when the water comes out of the pool it hits this return apron and it’s piped back to a recirculation pit. And that pipe was broken on the east side of the pool so it was causing all of the water that we were pumping in it to fill it, to go out that break and go through a rock bed and down into a drain line and basically just go to waste.”

Henderson says they had to make four openings in the pool deck to find the break. The pipe has been repaired and the concrete has been replaced. He adds that the pool is now filled with water and should be ready to open at 11 a.m. Monday. A large contributor to the delay in repairs was due to scheduling Pleva Mechanical, as they have been addressing similar problems at nearly a dozen other pools in the state after the recent winter’s frost heave.
