Weather continues to play a factor for construction of the new high school and career academy for the Greene County School District.
School board member and owner’s representative on the project Sam Harding says there’s been a slight delay in the erection of precast concrete walls of the career academy. According to Harding, the ground has been too wet for the heavy-load semis to take the walls onto the site, due to the issue of the semis getting stuck in the wet ground. Therefore, the walls will be delivered from the manufacturer in Dyersville within the next two weeks.
A lot of other work continues on the project. The building pad for the entire site has been constructed. Greene County Schools Superintendent Tim Christensen talks about the site work that had to be completed for the career academy portion of the building.
“Before we started to build, there was kind of a hill there on the west side of that, that the reason why they started on the career academy is because they had to actually cut probably 4-6-feet from that area and they had to build up that area on the east side.”
Because of that extra excavation that took place, Harding notes that about 25-percent of the $280,000 that was set aside specifically for over-excavation has been used. Harding doesn’t anticipate having to use all of those funds in that line item.
Christensen says all of the footings have been prepped and poured for the career academy as crews will continue to work in a clockwise rotation for the other parts of the project. The portion that is being prepped currently is the classroom, followed by the gym and finally the auditorium. With a slight delay in the project overall, Harding believes crews can catch up and that it shouldn’t impact the anticipated opening date of the career academy and high school buildings of August 1, 2020.
