Tomorrow marks the 20th annual Relay for Life event for Guthrie County with about 15 teams joining to raise funds for cancer research.
The public is encouraged to wear their favorite pair of boots for “20 Years of Stompin’ Out Cancer” at the Guthrie County Fairgrounds Events Center. The event begins at 4 p.m. with registration, a silent auction and a freewill donation dinner at 5 p.m. There will be kids activities throughout the evening including a cake walk, yard games, and face painting. The opening ceremony will start at 6 p.m. which will include recognition of this year’s honorary survivor. The committee will be honoring Guthrie Center resident Lillien Gilson and her family, who organized the first Relay for Life event 20 years ago.
Event Co-chair Becky Peterson welcomes everyone, including newcomers, to attend, “It always helps the survivors and caregivers show that the entire community is behind them when even if you feel like you haven’t been affected there’s always someone who’s been affected or knows someone who’s affected so we invite everyone down to this event. It not only shows them that we’re all behind them and with them during their fight or even long after their fight.”
Peterson adds it can be a great opportunity for those interested in starting a team to get a feel for what Relay for Life is like. The event will wrap up with a pie auction at 7 p.m., and DJ music at 9 p.m. For more information visit here.
