A Michigan man is in the Guthrie County Jail for several offenses, including possession of contraband.

According to the criminal complaint, a Guthrie County Sheriff’s Deputy conducted a traffic stop in Stuart on June 13th for a van having a cracked windshield and a nonworking third brake light. When speaking with the driver, 45-year-old Nicky Oliver Searfoss of Gladwin, Michigan, the deputy could smell a strong marijuana odor coming from the van. When asked for his drivers license Searfoss stated it was suspended. The deputy then ran Searfoss’ background information and explained he smelled the marijuana odor. Searfoss stated there was no marijuana in the van but he admitted that there was a marijuana pipe that belonged to him. Upon searching the van, the deputy found a glass pipe and a knife that measured just over five inches long.

Searfoss was then transported and booked into jail.

After Searfoss changed his clothes and was walking to his cell another deputy asked him why he was walking like something was hidden in his pants. Searfoss denied having anything and the deputy then told him that taking contraband into the jail was a felony. When asked again Searfoss admitted he had a bag of marijuana tucked between his legs. He went back to the booking room where he pulled out the baggie and was redressed and placed into his cell. A dispatcher then walked into the bathroom where Searfoss changed his clothes and found a plastic bag containing a white powder on the floor. A deputy then placed it into an evidence bag and interviewed Searfoss. Searfoss denied knowing anything about the bag stating it wasn’t his.

Searfoss has been charged with two counts of possession of contraband in a correctional institution, a class D felony; carrying weapons, an aggravated misdemeanor; possession of methamphetamine first offense and possession of marijuana first offense, both serious misdemeanors. Searfoss remains in jail under a $5,000 bond. Raccoon Valley Radio will bring you more information as it becomes official.
