At the most recent Adel City Council meeting, several individuals were appointed to an assortment of boards, committees, and commissions, though there are still a few openings left.
The first appointment was to the Economic Development Commission. There were three openings and applicants, though the current direction of the commission is in flux, so only incumbent Thomas Book was appointed. City Administrator Anthony Brown says as the purpose of the commission becomes more clear, the City will once again seek applicants. Next, the Council reappointed Wayne Rebischke and Van VanBuren to the Library Board, and Dan Novelli to the Board of Adjustment. Following that, they reappointed Deb Christensen to the Historic Preservation Commission, but didn’t fill the second opening. There was another applicant, but per Iowa code, there needs to be a gender balance on the commission, and a male was needed to fill the slot.
Similarly, there were four openings on the Parks and Recreation Board, and they needed to be filled by either three men and one woman or two of each. Four men applied, and Mayor Jim Peters ended up appointing two incumbents, Heith Hockenberry and Rich Miller, to three year terms, and one new member, Ryan Steinfeldt, for two years. The remaining positions on the Historic Preservation Commission and Parks and Rec Board will be advertised once again, with applicants considered at the next regular Council meeting on July 9th. The last appointment had the most applicants, with four individuals seeking a place on the Planning and Zoning Commission. Council member Bob Ockerman recommended Scott Lyon based on his community involvement, and the Council unanimously approved the appointment.
