Greene County’s only lead on Monday night vs. Saydel (Des Moines) in Heart of Iowa Activities Conference softball in Jefferson was the final score; 6-5. The Rams scored four times in the bottom of the seventh inning to pull out the victory, their third in a row. Coach Tom Kennedy’s team is now 3-8 overall and 2-3 in the conference while the Eagles fell to 2-3 in the league and 3-6 overall.
The game was scoreless through four innings. The Eagles picked up two unearned runs in the fifth. One of those was a line drive homer to dead center from senior catcher Alle Thompson when the ball skimmed off the yellow piping at the top of the fence, hit the flagpole, and dropped to the ground.
Greene County tied it at 2-2 in their half of the fifth. Tieryn Tucker opened with a single. With two outs, Megan Carey reached on a bunt single, and Izzy Bravard’s infield hit brought in the first run. The second scored on a bases loaded walk on a 3-2 pitch to Jenna Beyers.
The Eagles scored once in the sixth and twice in the seventh for a 5-2 lead before the Greene County rally. Kyla Beyers got it going with a leadoff single. Bravard and Jenna Beyers picked up one out base hits. With two outs, Carmyn Paup delivered a two-run RBI single to close it to 5-4. Tucker was intentionally walked, and Karissa Stephenson reached on an error to tie the game. Eighth grader Emma Stream had the game winning hit, a single off the glove of the shortstop, who tried to make a backhand catch of a shallow hump-backed liner to left while running toward the foul line. The ball hit the ground and the Rams complete the comeback.
