The Perry Fareway presented a check Friday morning to the Chamber of Commerce, which will go towards the annual Fourth of July Fireworks Drive.
Between May 17-25, the grocery store was able to raise $2,500 in this year’s Round-Up fundraiser. Customers were asked to round their total up to the nearest dollar or beyond, with the remainder donated to the fireworks display. The check presentation also served as a victory celebration of sorts for Fareway, as they won the friendly competition with the Perry Hy-Vee by virtue of having the higher round-up total. Fareway Store Manager Travis Landgrebe credited the shoppers for their generosity, as well as his cashiers for their persistence in getting people to participate.
Landgrebe said he gave his cashiers incentives to ask each customer to round up, with anyone who was able to raise more than $100 at their register receiving a Fareway gift card. Eight employees met the goal, with the top earner bringing in $380.59. He added, a total of 4,591 transactions were rounded up during the eight days of the fundraiser, nearly 300 more than 2018. They averaged $.54 per transaction.
