The Greene County High School boys’ soccer program plays Regina Catholic of Iowa City today in the quarterfinals of the Class 1A State Tournament. The entire tournament was to have started Thursday, but poor field conditions prompted moving day one back 24 hours to today. The action is at the James W. Cownie Soccer Complex on the southeast side of Des Moines and all the play-by-play can be heard on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com. Coverage begins at 11:45 a.m. with kickoff at 12:05 p.m.
Coach Carl Behne’s Rams are in just their second year of existence and are ranked eighth, seeded fifth, and have a 14-5 record. Regina (15-6) is making its twelfth State appearance, its eleventh in a row, and the Regals have seven State titles to their credit, including the last two. Despite the differences in program longevity and experience, the teams were tied at 3-3 at the end of regulation when they met earlier this season at the Nevada Tournament, a match Regina won 4-3 on penalty kicks.
The Greene County/Regina winner meets either top seed North Polk (Alleman) or West Liberty at noon Saturday in the semifinals. The Rams lost 2-1 to NP during the regular season and have not played West Liberty.
