Starting today and running each Thursday for the rest of the summer, the City of Perry will be spraying for mosquitoes.

Public Works Director Jack Butler says the City provides this service each year in an effort to curb the mosquito population. He says spraying will start at 7 p.m. Thursdays, though if there’s inclement weather it will be pushed back to Friday or Saturday. Butler also points out that residents can do their part to suppress mosquitoes. “With all the rain that we’ve been having, I just want to do a quick reminder to people: you know if you’ve got buckets out in your backyard — laying next to the garage or whatever; anything that can hold rainwater — make sure you get them dumped out. Because it’s just the perfect opportunity for mosquitoes to hatch.”

Butler adds, if residents have an area of their property where standing water can’t be drained, the City will supply “mosquito dunks,” which look like hockey pucks that can kill larvae before it hatches. He also reminds people that the new mosquito sprayer is much quieter than the old one, so citizens will sometimes call City Hall wondering if the sprayer has been to their area. He promises that the whole City will be covered each Thursday, whether residents hear the machine or not. Anyone with questions can reach out to Perry City Hall at 515-465-2481.
