Greene County has scored 106 goals and averages well over five goals per match. Both of those numbers lead the eight teams that qualified for the Class 1A Boys’ State Soccer Tournament tomorrow, Friday, and Saturday on the southeast side of Des Moines at the James W. Cownie Soccer Complex. The Rams are the fifth seed and face fourth seeded and two-time defending State Champion Regina Catholic of Iowa City at 12:05 p.m. tomorrow in the quarterfinals.
Junior Gutierrez, a high school junior, leads all of Iowa in goals scored (55) and points scored (123) for the 14-5 Rams. The Regals are 15-6 and own a 4-3 shootout victory on penalty kicks over the Rams earlier this month at the Nevada Tournament.
Defensively, the Rams have the highest goals allowed average at at 1.47, the highest of the eight teams in the 1A field. That goals against average drops to 1.20 when junior Cael Fisher is in goal. Fisher missed the first Regina match, and a few others, after having appendix surgery during the regular season.
Any and all Greene County State Soccer Tournament matches will be broadcast on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com. Tomorrow’s coverage starts at 11:45 a.m.
