In just its second year of existence, the boys’ soccer program at Greene County High School plays today for a trip to the Class 1A State Tournament on May 30 in Des Moines. Coach Carl Behne’s team travels to Oakland for the second time in four days and will face AHSTW (Avoca) at 12 p.m. in the 1A Substate 8 final. The winner advances to the State Tournament quarterfinals while the losing team will have its season end.

AHSTW is the top seed in Substate 8 at 18-2 and ranked sixth. Greene County is the two seed at 13-5 and ranked eighth.

It’s already been quite a season for Coach Behne, assistant coach Chad Black, and the Rams, but a win today would make quite an accomplishment for a year two program. Junior Gutierrez leads all classes of Iowa high school boys soccer in goals (52) and points scored (117) while Luis Velazco is tied for tenth in scoring.

KGRA 98.9 FM will broadcast today’s match from Riverside High School in Oakland with coverage beginning at 11:45 a.m. The action can also be streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com.
