The Pleasant Hill Memorial Committee and the Greene County Historical Society are partnering to host the Pleasant Hill Homecoming service and potluck dinner on Sunday.
The 138-year-old church will be the site of the annual tradition during the Memorial Day weekend with the festivities kicking off at 9:30am with a revival-like service from the Central Christian Church. Then at 10am juice, coffee and Marianne Carlson’s cinnamon rolls will be served.
The Homecoming service begins at 11. It includes hymn singing, a musical salute to veterans and service members that will be led by Mark and Rita Rasmussen, followed by an invocation and benediction by Reverend Dale Hanaman. Three guest speakers will then make brief remarks. The speakers include: Melissa Frederick, State Representative Phil Thompson and 96-year-old Wallace Teagarden, who will do a patriotic oration. Frederick and Thompson each have family ties to the Pleasant Hill Church.
A 21-gun salute will be done outdoors from the Kinkead Martin American Legion Post of Rippey at noon, followed by the playing of “Taps” by Sam Basset on trumpet. The event wraps up with the chicken potluck meal. Chicken will be provided, but attendees are asked to bring a side dish and their own tableware. A free-will offering will be accepted to help with the cost of the event and the ongoing maintenance of the church.
There will also be a print of an oil-painting of the church to be sold for $50 as part of a fundraiser for the historical society. Pre-registration is not necessary for the Sunday event.
