It didn’t take much time for the ACGC softball team to get the bats going in the 2019 season. Though they gave up the first run against the Audubon Wheelers, the Chargers scored twelve unanswered to get a 12-1 opening night victory in Guthrie Center Monday night.

The majority of the twelve runs came in the bottom of the 2nd. Sophomore Kylie Young launched a home run to left field, scoring classmate Tori Fuller in the process to take a 2-1 lead. They would add six more in that half inning to hold an 8-1 advantage going into the top of the 3rd. The gold and black scored four more in the bottom of the 3rd to reach twelve runs. The score held for the remainder of the game as the ten-run rule went into effect after Audubon failed to score in the top of the 5th.

Sophomore Madalyn Kelsey was perfect at the dish, going 3-3 with three singles and an RBI. Senior Genevieve Hoover went 2-3 with a pair of doubles and three RBIs. Senior Savana Fuller pitched the full five innings, striking out three and walking two Wheeler batters. She also went 1-3 at the plate with a triple and an RBI.

Fuller and the Chargers go to 1-0 on the season. It’s the second straight year the Chargers have secured an opening night victory against the Wheelers by an eleven-run margin. The ACGC baseball team wasn’t able to catch that same spark, and fell to Audubon, 11-1. The lone run came from freshman Reid Rumelhart, driven in by senior Ben Kingery.

Both teams are scheduled to host the Madrid Tigers in a West Central Activities Conference opener tonight. Weather permitting, you can hear the ACGC softball game on KKRF2 and RaccoonValleyRadio.com. First pitch is set for 6pm with pregame at 5:30 from Guthrie Center.
