Greene County thought it would be playing the first game of the 2019 high school baseball season in Greenfield vs. Nodaway Valley, but the weather forecast prompted officials to change the site of the Monday night contest to Jefferson, with varsity playing first at 5:30 p.m. The result was a 6-5 victory in eight innings for the Rams. Freshman Joe Carey singled in the winning run for the last of the Rams’s 10 hits. Another freshman, Bryce Stalder, went three for three at the plate, while junior Tyler Teeples had two hits. Juniors Nick Breon and Brent Riley, and seniors Joe Anderson and David Richter, each had one hit. Teeples had a double for the lone extra base hit. Breon, Richter, Riley, and Teeples each drove in a run.

Breon pitched the first 5-1/3 innings, allowing three runs, all earned, on three hits and four walks. He struck 11 batters out. Riley picked up the win in relief, going the final 2-2/3 innings, allowing six hits and two runs, both earned, with three strikeouts and two walks.

Greene County was the first to scoring, putting four runs on the board in the fifth inning, but the Wolverines answered with four in the sixth. Greene County went ahead 6-5 after six, but a run by NV in the top of the seventh knotted the score again.

The Rams are scheduled to host Perry on Thursday at Allensworth Field on KGRA and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com. Coverage at 7 p.m. with first pitch scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
