With the unofficial start of the summer season coming this weekend, law enforcement agencies are now ramping up their focus on seat belt usage with their next special Traffic Enforcement Program (sTEP) Wave.
The National Click It or Ticket campaign will have law enforcement looking for individuals who are not using their seat belts. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2017 59-percent of pickup truck occupants were killed because they didn’t have their seat belts on, compared to 42-percent of car occupants. The NHTSA also reports from 2017 that 56-percent of those killed in traffic-related crashes were unbuckled in the back seat.
Last year during the Memorial Day weekend, there were four traffic fatalities on Iowa’s roads that could’ve been prevented. The Jefferson Police Department reminds everyone to use their seat belts when in a vehicle because it is the law.
The sTEP Wave is from May 20th through June 2nd.
