For the second straight year the Panorama girls track and field team brought home the third place trophy from the state track meet.
The Lady Panthers missed out on second place by just a single point on their way to back-to-back third place finishes. They entered Saturday atop the team standings, but a big day for Mid-Prairie propelled them to yet another state championship.
Panorama brought home individual medals in nine events, led by third place finishes for Bailey Beckman in the long jump and the distance medley relay team of Hope Arganbright, Kassidy Bremer, Beckman and Gwen Steffen. Fourth place finishes came from Ella Waddle in the 3000 meters, Lydia Knapp in discus and the 4×400 relay team of Beckman, Olivia Steffen, Lydia Lindstrom and Gwen Steffen.
Other medalist performances for Panorama were Gwen Steffen taking sixth in the 800, Waddle placing sixth in the 1500 while setting a new school record, Morgan Johnk taking eighth in high jump and a fifth place finish for the 4×800 relay team of Lindstrom, Payton Beckman and both Steffen sisters.
The relay teams also set school records in each of the three events they medaled in.
Coach Greg Thompson said he felt the team lacked unity at times but he was proud of the way they came together Saturday to earn the team trophy.
There were six seniors on this year’s team: Hope Arganbright, Bailey Beckman, Brooklyn Behrends, Kassidy Bremer, Morgan Johnk, and Lydia Knapp. Thompson called them one of the best classes to come through not only the track program but all of Panorama athletics.
Three of the six seniors will be continuing their track careers in college. Knapp is committed to the University of South Dakota, Johnk to Northern Iowa and Beckman will compete in both track and basketball at Dordt.
