A petition to have a special election to fill a vacancy on the Jefferson City Council has been submitted.

A petition with 65 signatures was submitted at City Hall on May 3rd, ahead of the May 7th filing deadline. Thirty-two signatures were required to call for a special election. The petition was submitted, following the appointment made by the City Council at the April 23rd regular meeting. At the recommendation of Mayor Craig Berry, they appointed Darren Jackson to fill the vacancy, which he has been sworn-in.

City Clerk Diane Kennedy says the earliest the Council could consider calling for a special election and setting the date is at their next regular meeting on May 14th. The earliest date the election could be held is June 18th. Berry indicated he may recommend June 25th as the election date for the Council to consider. Candidates would have 25 days prior to the election to file nomination papers to be on the ballot.  Whoever is elected would then serve out the remaining term which would be through 2021. Jackson will remain on the Council until the special election happens.
