With the recent fatal incident where a bicyclist was struck and killed by a vehicle in southeast Iowa this week, motorists and riders are reminded to watch out for each other on the road.
Guthrie County Sheriff Marty Arganbright tells bicyclists to be mindful of vehicles when using highways and county roads, “It can be a hazard for them because motorists don’t slow down, they also don’t pay attention for bicyclists when they’re riding on the main part of the highway. It can back up traffic and some motorists get upset because the bicyclists won’t get over.”
Arganbright informs drivers that bicyclists can legally be on the highways, so it’s up to both parties to work together to ensure no unfortunate incidents occur.
