Summer is rapidly approaching, and parents looking for ways to keep their children active while school is out are encouraged to sign them up for youth sports leagues through the Adel Parks and Recreation Department.

In particular, sign-ups are currently open for the Little Sluggers baseball and softball leagues, as well as the all new youth tennis league. Little Sluggers is designed as a pre-tee ball program open to kids age 3-4. It is coached by parent volunteers who will introduce players to tee ball, while placing an emphasis on the fun of the game. There are two sessions, the first running from June 10-28, and the second from July 8-24. Games will be played Monday and Wednesday evenings at Kinnick-Feller Park.

Meanwhile, Adel Parks and Rec is rolling out the youth tennis program this summer for the first time. There are two age groups, with the red ball league for ages 5-8 and orange ball for 9-12. The program is designed to teach children the fundamentals of tennis, with lessons building on one another to develop a complete set of skills for the athletes. Participants should bring a water bottle and racket if they have one, though the league will have some for kids to use. All other equipment will be provided. There will be two sessions of the tennis league, with the first going from June 11-27 and the second from July 9-25. Lessons will be given Tuesday and Thursday mornings.

Registration is required for the Little Sluggers and youth tennis leagues, and can be done online by clicking the link below. The deadline to register for the first sessions of each is May 24th. Cost to participate is $35 per child for Little Sluggers, $45 for red ball tennis, and $60 for orange ball. For more information, contact Adel Parks and Rec at 515-993-4525.
