The Perry American Legion, Post 85, has chosen their representative for this year’s Iowa Hawkeye Boys State session: Perry High School junior Calvin Sass.
Sass will now get the opportunity to take part in the weeklong festivities to be held at Camp Dodge in Johnston this June. He joins around 700 other students from around the state who will learn about city, county, and state government and the legislative process of Iowa. Participants will take part in mock legislative sessions, campaigning, party rallies, debating, and voting, getting fully engrossed in the parliamentary process. In addition to the political activities, Sass and the other Boys State attendees will have the opportunity to hear motivational speakers and representatives from local and state government.
The program will begin on June 9th and will wrap up with the final General Assembly on June 14th. During the finale, awards and scholarships will be announced. Participants are chosen based on their interest, leadership, and scholastic qualities. Boys State is sponsored by the Iowa Department of the American Legion.
