The annual Perry Public Library Summer Reading program will kick off this year at the beginning of June, and people of all ages can start signing up now.

The national theme for this year is “A Universe of Stories.” Children’s Librarian Suzanne Kestel points out it’s similar to their “Discover Space” program from last year, though she promises there will be a host of new events this year for all ages. Kestel says the kids program will specifically be covering the moon, with an assortment of lunar-inspired activities. “So we’ll be talking about the moon phases, the terrain on the moon, (and) the 50th anniversary of the moon landing. And so we can sign up (now), and I want everybody to come in! They’ll get their little registration bag, and you know you get prizes for reading! Isn’t that amazing?”

The teen and adult programs will also have prizes and incentives for reading, to go along with a variety of space-themed events. As always, the Perry Summer Reading Program is free to participate, which Assistant Library Director Misty VonBehren says is only possible through outside support. “(There’s) absolutely no cost, we are very fortunate that we have sponsors that help us pay for Summer Reading. And so we encourage, whether you’re two-months-old, or 98-years-old, come into the library this summer, register for Summer Reading, and have fun!”

The program will commence with Kids Fest, which will be held on Saturday, June 1st. You can sign up now, either at the library or on their website, www.perry.lib.ia.us.
