Iowa and surrounding states affected by this year’s floods could receive $3 billion in relief funds as part of a U.S. House bill.

Representative for Iowa’s Third District Cindy Axne (D) says this week she has helped secure language for the funds in House Resolution 2157, which seeks to address the needs of the Midwest and Puerto Rico, which was hit by Hurricane Maria almost two years ago.

Axne says the bill is expected to have a House floor vote next week, “I’m doing everything I possibly can to make sure that we address the issues that we’re facing, cover things that might not be necessarily included by asking for statutory language, for example, to cover the grain in the bins that was lost and not insured. And I think it’s a really comprehensive bill that addresses everything from that to funding for mental health issues, obviously this is a very stressful situation for families. And then I’m hoping that when we pass it out of the House that our senators will understand how important it is to pass the bill and get this done.”

After being passed in the House, the bill would head to the Senate for a vote. This proposal follows two that failed to advance in the Senate last April.
