The next several weeks may be the best time of year for anglers to catch walleye, crappies, and other fish in Guthrie County.
Guthrie County Conservation Director Joe Hanner says he recently caught several crappies, which he says will probably be more popular as they move to shallower water and spawn over the next few weeks, “Right now is just, end of April and the month of May, some of the best fishing of the year. As fish move up into warmer water and think about spawning and they feed up from a long winter. And if folks are interested in fishing I would say the next month to 6-7 weeks is probably as good as it gets for the whole year.”
There isn’t much for lake fishing in the County besides Springbrook State Park, so Hanner recommends the Raccoon River for walleye, catfish, and smallmouth bass. He adds, if you can get permission from property owners, farm ponds can be fantastic fisheries for anglers.
