Greene County residents that have private water wells can have them tested for free.
County Sanitarian Chuck Wenthold says water samples from private wells can be tested for certain forms of bacteria, nitrite and arsenic. Wenthold will come to the residence, collect water samples for free and he may also ask for permission to collect additional samples for other specified contaminants to test in your water.
The water samples are then sent to the State Hygienic Laboratory at the University of Iowa. The results are sent to you through Wenthold’s office. The program is provided for free through the Iowa Private Well Program and is part of a study at the University of Iowa.
