Dallas County Conservation is kicking off the spring paddling season with an event this weekend, and they’re hoping for good weather to make sure it happens.

The Birding and Paddling Spring River Float will be held Saturday, starting at the Redfield low head dam boat ramp at 1 p.m. The trip will take people down the Raccoon River to the Pleasant Valley boat ramp, expected to be at around 5 p.m. In addition to introducing attendees to the waterways in Dallas County, Conservation utilizes events like this to teach people about the native wildlife. Their focus for this first event will be on the birds that can be found in the water corridors. As such, it’s also part of Conservation’s Big Year Birding Challenge for 2019.

The float is free to attend and open to all ages, though registration is required. There will be boats provided by Conservation for attendees to use, but there is a limited number so people are encouraged to bring their own. The event is weather-dependant, and organizers will let the public know if there’s any change.
