One final wrinkle was added recently in the story of Marc and Misty Ray of Perry and their involvement in the death of their 16-year-old adopted daughter Sabrina in 2017, as a judge has ordered the couple to pay fines to the State of Iowa.

Marc and Misty, currently serving 80-year and life-in-prison sentences, respectively, now must pay back $50,035 in adoption subsidy overpayments from the Iowa Department of Human Services, according to online court documents. They will also be required to cover $26,382.82 in overpayments from the DHS support center. The additional fees were assessed as a result of years of collecting money from the State after adopting several children, and then not using the money as it was intended. The extra $76,000 is now added to the couple’s bill, which also includes $150,000 in victim restitution to be paid to Sabrina’s heirs at law.

Marc and Misty, as well as three other family members pleaded guilty for their involvement in the events leading up to the May 12, 2017 death of Sabrina. The teen was found unresponsive in the Ray’s home in Perry, having died of severe malnutrition at the hands of her adoptive family. She weighed 56 pounds at the time of her death.
