Despite the dreary weather, several people showed their support in the fight against cancer with the Greene County Relay for Life main event at the Greene County Community Center.

A total of 15 teams registered and five teams participated in the Saturday event with teams walking around the indoor track and selling fundraising items. This year’s theme is “Find Your Super Power” and the rainy weather also didn’t stop the survivor walk as close to 25 survivors and caregivers found their “super power” did their survivor walk through the gym of the community center. Survivor/Caregiver Committee Chair Carla Offenburger said Greene County Medical Center continues to sponsor the cancer survivor/caregiver reception and the hospital also provides other services for cancer patients.

“Sponsoring the survivor reception is just one way that we can celebrate with survivors (and) that they’re here and that there are able to celebrate and we’re proud to do that. We’re also proud that we offer them a special survivor t-shirt. We design that every year and ShineOn Design helps us with that. I always say it’s the best t-shirt that you never want to wear. If you have one you’re a special person and you’re a super power all on your own.”

While the final figures from the event haven’t been released, one spur of the moment was the “46-second challenge” that raised $123. There was also a silent auction, a 50/50 cash raffle and luminarias that closed out the event. Plus Raccoon Valley Radio’s Big Red Radio was there broadcasting live. The overall goal was to raise $32,000.
