Cold, windy, and sometimes wet conditions were what athletes had to deal with Saturday at Drake Stadium in Des Moines for the final day of the 110th Drake Relays. Greene County had both its girls and boys in the 4 x 100 meter relay preliminaries in the morning. Although it was dry at the time, neither quartet was able to match or exceed a season best.

The girls ran 53.48 seconds and finished 92nd among 96 teams. Senior Melanie Doran led off, and was followed by junior Maddy Sigler, and sophomores Makala Kafer and Brianna Osterson.

The boys tied for 48th place in the 4 x 100 in :44.92 with Tyler Teeples, Carter Morton, Brent Riley, and Colby Kafer. All are juniors.

The Rams had six events qualify for the Drake Relays, the most in the seven seasons competing as Greene County. The highest finish came from Morton in the boys’ high jump on Thursday when he placed sixth with a leap of six feet, five inches. Sophomore Brianna Osterson was seventh in the girls’ long jump at 17′ 3″, tying the best distance she’s ever recorded.

The other two Rams qualifying for Drake were Kafer in the long jump, where he fouled on all three attempts, and junior Tyler Miller, 26th in the shot put after fouling on two of his three attempts.

Greene County sends its full girls and boys teams to Alleman on Monday for the North Polk Coed Invitational.
