United States Senator Charles Grassley has been busy visiting several locations in his home state recently, and yesterday that included a trip to Adel to visit a long-running business.
Grassley visited Iowa Spring Manufacturing as part of his yearly 99 County Tour. He got a chance to meet and visit with Iowa Spring President Tim Bianco and then tour the factory. After that, he had a question and answer session with several of the 120 employees of the manufacturer. Topics of conversation included: the country’s finances, including trade agreements and tariff concerns; the uncertainty of Social Security; issues with the healthcare system and health insurance; immigration and how it relates to employment in Iowa; and the taxation of alternative energy sources.
Grassley has been able to cross off several of the 99 Iowa counties from his list in the last week, as the U.S. Congress is in the midst of a two-week break. He said visiting places like Iowa Spring and talking with constituents is as important to him as his work in Washington, D.C. “It’s very necessary to deal with people on a personal basis as much as you can, so they can look at you and you can look at them. I think you have more credibility. But whether it’s this way or email or phone calls, et cetera, dialogue between this Senator and my constituents is very important, because you can’t have representative government if you don’t know what’s on your constituents’ minds.”
