Farmers and crop producers who were impacted by last month’s floods can access federal funding to plant cover crops.

The Natural Resources Conservation Service is offering funds to plant cover crops and will be prioritized to those who can’t plant their fields with a cash crop this year. Iowa Cover Crop Co-Owner Bill Frederick explains the intent of what cover crops provide for farm ground.

“The intent is to tie up that soil and keep it where it is, and tie up those loose nutrients and attach them to a plant where they’re a little more stable. And that will be more usable for your next year’s corn or (soy)beans.”

Frederick adds that cover crops are typically planted right after the harvest season in the fall and are destroyed prior to the following spring planting season. More information about the available federal funding for cover crops can be found by clicking the link below.
