The Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau institutes special Traffic Enforcement Programs (sTEP) Waves during most major holidays throughout the year, though this weekend the program is being used for a different kind of “holiday.”
For many years, April 20th has been known in some circles as a celebration of smoking marijuana. While obviously not an official holiday, law enforcement officials recognize that “4/20” is nevertheless an observance to have in their crosshairs for cracking down on impaired driving. In spite of common myths, officials emphasize that operating vehicles while under the influence of marijuana does not make people better drivers. On the contrary, it’s been shown to slow reaction times, impair cognitive performance, and make it difficult for motorists to keep a steady position in their lane.
In order to combat drug-impaired driving, the theme of this weekend’s sTEP Wave is “Drive High, Get an OWI.” Local law enforcement will have a larger presence on the road today and tomorrow, specifically looking for impaired drivers, but also keeping watch for seatbelt and texting violations, among others. The Perry Police Department and Dallas County Sheriff’s Office will both be taking part in the sTEP Wave, receiving additional funding from the Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau for overtime hours.
