As planting season gets underway, there will be an increasing amount of farm machinery on roadways.
Greene County Sheriff Jack Williams reminds motorists that farm implements are slow-moving vehicles that take up a lot of the road, so he recommends passing them when it’s safe to do so, especially at night. “I imagine farmers are going to be running a lot at night this year, just due to the late start. So just keep in mind you may pop over a hill, and their taillights (or) brake lights, (or) even slow-moving vehicle signs may be covered with dust or dirt, some may not see them right away. So just drive slower and make sure you are paying attention to what’s coming up.”
As for other narrow structures like bridges, Williams says be cautious on those when encountering farm machinery.
“We’ve had a couple of accidents last year, especially on the Highway 30 overpass over by Grand Junction. It’s kind of blind in both directions and people don’t see them until they get up there. And they are taking up a lane, a lane and a half to where cars can’t really get by easily or safely.”
Williams urges everyone to have patience and drive safely when encountering farm machinery on roadways this season.
