For several years, the Dallas County Treasurer’s motor vehicle and driver’s license functions have been crammed into the relatively small facility located at 918 Court Street in Adel. However, soon the building will likely no longer house any County entities.
The Motor Vehicle Department will be moving to the first floor of the Dallas County Courthouse once renovations are complete, which could be as early as this June. Meanwhile, an appropriations bill for the Iowa Department of Transportation is on its way to the desk of Governor Kim Reynolds, which includes the establishment of a DOT driver’s license station in Dallas County. Reynolds has previously voiced her support of such a facility, so assuming it’s approved the County’s driver’s license function would no longer be in the hands of the Treasurer’s Office.
There’s no word as of now for where the DOT station would be located, though officials say it would be moved into an existing building as opposed to new construction. That will allow the State to take over the function sooner than expected, so the current facility could be completely vacated before the end of the summer. In response, the Dallas County Board of Supervisors recently approved ending their lease of 918 Court Street, once their current lease expires on April 30, 2020. It’s the last non-County-owned building that currently houses a County entity.
