The Greene County Peace Officer Association is going to host their first-ever event during the National Night Out this year.
As part of the festivities will be a taser demonstration in which one lucky participant will get to be tased for five seconds at the event, while also raising money for a good cause. Jefferson Police Officer and Peace Officer Association President Cody Smith encourages everyone to help raise money for their non-profit organization by selecting from a list of ten candidates who they want to be tased. The person who receives the most money will then be tased at the event on August 6th at the Greene County Community Center.
“With those funds, what we’re hoping to do, is start a scholarship program for local students that are wanting to go into the criminal justice field. Anything extra after the scholarships will be going to Shop With a Cop and any community enrichment programs along the way. But the main goal is going to be for the scholarships for the students for the Greene County High School and Paton-Churdan area.”
There are five candidates from the Greene County School District. Those include: At-Risk Liaison Emily Gannon, Special Education Teacher and High School Wrestling Head Coach Zach Beekman, Elementary Principal Scott Johnson, High School Principal Brian Phillips and Physical Education Teacher and coach Tyler Westhoff. There are also five candidates from the professional business community. Those individuals include: Greene County Medical Center CEO Carl Behne, Chris Deal of Deal’s Orchard, Game Changing Performance Owner Simone Lang, Jefferson Telecom Chief Operating Officer Jamie Daubendiek and Jefferson Herald Editor Andy McGinn.
A donation box will be traveling to a different business every couple of weeks. This week it is at Jefferson Hy-Vee. You can also make a donation at the law enforcement center. The deadline to make a donation is two weeks prior to the August 6th event. Checks can be made payable to the Greene County Peace Officers Association.
