The Greene County boys’ soccer team is 5-0 after posting its third straight shut out on Monday in Grand Junction vs. Harlan Community. A season ago, the Cyclones handed the Rams their first loss, but this time around, goalkeeper Cael Fisher and the defense kept Harlan off the board. The 3-0 win marked the lowest goal output of the season for head coach Carl Behne’s team, but the Cyclones are perhaps the best team the Rams have played so far, even though their record is a modest 4-5.
The team is averaging nearly eight goals per contest and two players are among the state leaders in goals scored. Junior Gutierrez has 16 goals and seven assists for 39 points, while Luis Velazco has 12 goals and two assists for 26 points. Gutierrez is Iowa’s leader in goals per match and points per match. Velazco is one of the few players in the state with a better shots on goal scoring percentage than Gutierrez.
The Rams have played fewer matches than most teams, but the total goals scored as a team is among Iowa’s best. The new rankings from the Iowa High School Soccer Association come out today. Currently, the Rams are ranked 14th in 1A, the smallest of Iowa’s three classes of boys’ soccer.
