In order to help the Perry High School boys and girls basketball programs following a pair of disappointing seasons, the coaches and administration are enlisting the aid of a well-known shooting guru and offering the Central Shooting Academy this summer.
Perry Superintendent Clark Wicks says the camp will be led by Craig Douma, the Head Men’s Basketball Coach at Central College in Pella. Douma has a reputation for his ability to coach players in the most basic, but perhaps most important fundamental in basketball: the jump shot. Wicks is hopeful the clinic will be well-attended, as the basketball teams seek to improve upon this past season. “We need to be more competitive on the hardwood, and one way that you can do that is to become a better shooter. And everybody can have that mindset that we can all become better shooters and better basketball players, and we are going to be more competitive. Our coaches are behind it, Mr. (Tom) Lipovac has helped to get this organized, so it’s a go! We’re excited about it. Perry basketball is going to improve, and it’s going to start this summer.”
The camp is open to boys and girls in grades 5-12, and it will be held June 12th, 19th, and 26th at the high school, and July 3rd at the elementary school. The sessions for participants in grades 5th through 8th will begin at 10 a.m. each day, and those in 9th through 12th will take the court at 11. The cost to attend is $25 for Perry students, and $75 for any others. To learn more about the Central Shooting Academy, contact Douma by phone at 641-628-5225 or email at doumac@central.edu.
