Work is progressing on the Dallas County Courthouse renovation, and the Treasurer’s Office was recently approved to acquire a system for when the Motor Vehicle Department moves over to the building.
The Board of Supervisors recently approved the purchase of the Q-Matic system, which Treasurer Mitch Hambleton says has been utilized for more than 20 years at each of the Department of Transportation driver’s license stations and the Polk County Treasurer’s Office. The system creates an automatic queue with the aid of a kiosk that customers will access upon arrival at the new Motor Vehicle offices in the courthouse. Hambleton is confident the Q-Matic system is the key to streamlining the department, particularly at the end of the month, which is their busiest time period.
“People by nature procrastinate. And when your tags are payable, they’re delinquent one month after your birth month. So usually people wait that month, and the last day of the month within the last two hours our lines grow huge. Well, with this method we can handle a registration renewal very quickly and just shoot those people through so they won’t have to wait behind someone moving in from out of state with transferring four vehicle titles into Dallas County. So we think that it’s really going to cut down our wait time for many individuals.”
The Q-Matic system has an initial cost of $37,772.59, with additional annual fees and maintenance. The Supervisors approved the purchase with a 2-1 vote, with Kim Chapman providing the dissent. He felt the system was more of a nicety than a necessity, and thought the department should wait and see the kind of traffic flow they would get after moving to the courthouse. The new Motor Vehicle Department office is expected to be finished this June, with the Q-Matic system already installed.
