A bill in the US House that aimed to address climate change has seen some action recently since its introduction.

The Green New Deal was proposed by first-year Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, (D) New York, with the goal of reducing carbon emissions while also creating new jobs. Iowa’s Fourth Congressional District Representative Steve King believes the bill is unbalanced and he claims the legislation is trying to control the weather. He argues that being environmentally friendly shouldn’t come at a cost to the American economy.

“We ought to have clean air, we ought to have clean water and we should be responsible about that. But let’s not go over the top and handicap America and let India and China then pollute the atmosphere at-will and keep their economies growing at the expense of ours.”

King describes why the Green New Deal continues to have traction.

“We’ve got a 29-year-old member of Congress that gets a lot of press and a lot of Democrats and presidential candidates don’t want to challenge her, or cross her, or fall into her disfavor. That’s what’s created the momentum on this Big Green New Deal.”

However, the legislation maybe taking a different path as the Senate took a procedural vote earlier this week and it failed. The House has yet to debate it and take a vote. Sources say the bill might be broken up into smaller bills to try and get different parts passed through more easily this session.
